4fores – For Optimal Renewable Energy Systems S.L.

4fores is a technological-based Spanish company dedicated to the optimization of power generation systems, and specializes in the integration of the renewable energy into network. More than 15 years of for quality research experience in the renewable sector is our biggest asset, carrying out grid integration, certification, testing, and ad-hoc power electronic converter and microgrid development tasks.

4fores offers solutions that allow to optimize energy production from renewable resources and to favour its growth and penetration in the electrical system. With some patents obtained since its creation in 2010, 4fores features its own technology, through which provides electrical tests services in wind turbines and photovoltaic plants.

4fores designs and manufactures power electronic converters for small and isolated generation facilities and for grid integration as inverters, rectifiers, battery chargers, supply systems, etc. Nowadays it is working on other lines such the design and manufacture of digital protections of power electronic systems, and Permanent Magnet generators and motors.

  • As from our origins, we work every day to realize our mission to bring R&D to the real world providing:
  • Applied innovative solutions
  • Technology transfer from R&D to successful commercial products
  • A truly personalized service to our customer

Role

4fores aims to take full advantage of the GaN benefits and develop ultra-efficient power conversion systems in the 5-10 kW range required to deploy a fully functional native DC microgrid, powered by Renewable Energy sources. Specifically, the following DC-DC stages to adequate voltage levels between both renewable and non-renewable power sources, microgrid distribution rail, and loads, will be addressed. In all cases, the main goal is to achieve a power between 5 to 10 kW with an operation frequency of hundreds of kHz, keeping a target efficiency above 98%.

In addition, 4fores will provide experimental data on the GaN device robustness, helping to determine the failure mechanisms of GaN devices in real field conditions, to contribute to the final device optimization.

Key Contribution

4fores accumulates considerable experience into R&D projects applied to power electronic application demonstration, especially in the Renewable Energy sector. This experience and the related know-how achieved should be exploited contributing to the development of new applications more and more efficient.

4fores previous work using GaN devices in DCDC converters will contribute to optimize the the new generation of GaN devices developed within UltimateGaN project technology; thanks to the demonstrators that will be built we will show its performance and push to its limits the operational boundaries in terms of temperature, voltage and power, but nevertheless keeping the final application robustness at acceptable levels.
